Bipolar electrolytic capacitors (electrolytic capacitors) are distinguished in two designs, "rough" and "smooth". "Rough" and "smooth" refer to the aluminum foil used from which the capacitor is wound. With the rough design, the foil is roughened so that the surface of the foil is increased. Since the capacitance of the capacitor is proportional to the surface, larger capacitances can be achieved with the same amount of material. This material saving is bought with slightly worse electrical values. The size of the rough capacitors is significantly smaller. The BR63 series offers capacitances up to 800 µF.

Bipolar electrolytic capacitors are used where large capacitances are required at low cost (resonance absorption circuits, impedance linearization, etc.) or where film capacitors (MCAP®, MKT) are not used for cost reasons. The higher dielectric strength of the rough design also allows its use where smooth electrolytic capacitors are not sufficiently voltage-resistant.
